A Beautifully Balanced Yame Sencha

Kurenai is a well-balanced sencha produced by Hoshino Seichaen in the mountainous tea-growing region of Yame, Fukuoka.

The blend is centered around Saemidori and complemented by select cultivars such as Kirari 31, Tsuyuhikari, and Yabukita. Together, they create a harmonious balance of flavor, aroma, and vibrant green color characteristic of tea from the mountainous Okuyame region.

Harvested around late April, Kurenai offers an approachable yet refined expression of Yame sencha. Its balance makes it enjoyable throughout the year and suitable for both everyday drinking and serving to guests.

It is one of Hoshino Seichaen’s especially popular year-round sencha blends.

Brewing Instructions

Traditional Preparation β€” Hoshino Seichaen Recommendation

For 2–3 small Japanese teacups

  • Tea: 6g
  • Water: 6 fl oz (180ml)
  • Water temperature: 158Β°F (70Β°C)
  • Steeping time: Approximately 45–75 seconds
  1. Bring fresh water to a full boil.
  2. Pour the water into the serving cups to measure the appropriate amount and allow it to cool to approximately 158Β°F (70Β°C).
  3. Place 6g of tea leaves in a teapot.
  4. Pour the cooled water into the teapot.
  5. Steep for approximately 45–75 seconds.
  6. Pour a little tea into each cup in rotation to distribute the flavor evenly.
  7. Continue pouring until the teapot is completely empty.

For a deeper-steamed batch, begin with approximately 45 seconds. If the leaves are more firmly rolled and closer to a standard steam, begin with 60–75 seconds.

For the second infusion, add hot water and begin pouring after a shorter steep.

For the best flavor: Use fresh, good-quality water.

Luna Matcha tip: Filtered or soft water works especially well for Japanese green tea.

For a Larger Cup β€” Luna Matcha Recommendation

For a 12 fl oz (355ml) cup, begin with approximately 7–9g of tea.

Use water at approximately 158Β°F (70Β°C) and steep for 45–75 seconds. Adjust the amount of tea or steeping time according to your preferred strength.

Directly doubling the traditional ratio to 12g will produce a significantly stronger cup with more caffeine.
