Why Matcha Prices—and Availability—Sometimes Change
Share
At LunaMatcha, we believe that finding exceptional matcha should not require refreshing a website at exactly the right moment or waiting indefinitely for the next restock.
Our goal is simple: to make authentic, carefully sourced matcha reliably available to customers in the United States.
In recent years, worldwide demand for Japanese matcha has grown much faster than supply. Matcha production cannot be increased overnight. Tea must be cultivated, shaded, harvested, processed into tencha, and carefully stone-milled. Each part of this process takes time, specialized equipment, and generations of expertise.
As demand has increased, respected Japanese producers—including Marukyu Koyamaen—have introduced purchase limits and restricted the quantities available to retailers. Some highly sought-after products may now be allocated in very small quantities, even to established retail partners.
How We Manage Limited Supply
For selected Marukyu Koyamaen products, LunaMatcha periodically reviews pricing based on several factors:
-
Manufacturer allocations and expected future availability
-
Our cost to replace inventory
-
Currency exchange rates
-
International shipping, import, and handling costs
-
Current demand and the amount of inventory available in the United States
This means prices may occasionally increase when supply becomes especially limited. Prices may also decrease when availability improves or demand changes.
Our intention is not to follow short-term market speculation. It is to manage limited inventory responsibly so that products remain available to more customers over a longer period of time.
Rather than selling an entire allocation within minutes, we aim to offer a more dependable way for customers to purchase the matcha they enjoy—without requiring them to monitor every restock.
The Lowest Price and the Most Reliable Access Are Not Always the Same
In some cases, purchasing directly from a producer in Japan may offer a lower product price. We respect that option and have mentioned it openly in the past.
However, direct availability is often limited, popular products can sell out within minutes, and international shipping may involve additional cost, time, and uncertainty.
LunaMatcha provides a different kind of value:
-
Inventory already located in the United States
-
Carefully handled and properly stored products
-
Fast domestic fulfillment
-
Responsive U.S.-based customer service
-
Access to limited and highly sought-after selections
-
A carefully curated range of matcha for different tastes and uses
We do not promise to always be the lowest-priced source. We work to be one of the most dependable.
A Different Approach for LunaMatcha Organic Matcha
Our LunaMatcha organic collection follows a different supply model.
Through long-term sourcing relationships and advance inventory planning, we have been able to keep the pricing of our organic matcha relatively stable over the years. While occasional adjustments may become necessary as production and import costs change, price stability remains one of our priorities.
This allows us to offer health-conscious customers a consistent selection of organic matcha while continuing to support careful farming, quality production, and reliable availability.
Our Commitment
Whether you choose a celebrated matcha from Marukyu Koyamaen or one of our organic matcha selections, our commitment remains the same:
Authentic matcha, carefully sourced and reliably available in the United States.
Matcha availability will continue to change with each harvest, producer allocation, and season of demand. We will continue to manage our inventory thoughtfully, adjust prices in both directions when circumstances change, and communicate as clearly as possible.
Because for us, supplying exceptional matcha is not only about offering the lowest price on a particular day. It is about being here when you are ready for your next bowl.
