Easy Iced Matcha Lemonade Recipe

Makes: 1 serving
Preparation time: About 5 minutes

Ingredients

  • 2 g matcha powder (approximately 1 level teaspoon; weighing is more consistent)
  • 30 ml / 1 US fl oz water, warm or cool, depending on your mixing method
  • 180 ml / ยพ US cup chilled, ready-to-drink lemonade
  • Ice cubes, enough to fill your serving glass about halfway
  • Optional: simple syrup to taste and a lemon slice for serving

Use prepared lemonade, not undiluted lemon juice or lemonade concentrate. The ratios above are a starting point; sweetness and acidity vary considerably between brands and homemade recipes.

Instructions

  1. Sift the matcha. Sift the powder into a small bowl to break up clumps.
  2. Mix with water. Add the 30 ml of warm water, around 158โ€“176ยฐF / 70โ€“80ยฐC, and whisk until evenly dispersed. For a cold-water method, place the sifted matcha and cool water in a small, tightly sealed shaker and shake thoroughly. Never shake hot liquid in a sealed container.
  3. Prepare the glass. Add ice and the chilled lemonade to a glass large enough to leave room for the matcha mixture.
  4. Add the matcha. Pour the mixed matcha over the lemonade. You can pour slowly for a layered presentation, then stir before drinking.
  5. Taste and adjust. Add a little simple syrup if needed. If the lemonade is too intense, add a splash of cold water. Serve immediately.

You do not need a separate refrigeration step. The ice and chilled lemonade cool the small amount of matcha mixture as you assemble the drink.

Which Matcha Should You Use?

Choose unsweetened matcha powder with a flavor you enjoy. Lemonade adds a strong sweet-and-tart element, so consider how much of the tea's flavor you want to taste alongside it.

LunaMatcha Symphony, our organic matcha from Kagoshima, is an option to explore for everyday mixed drinks. Start with the recipe above and adjust to your preference.

You can also use matcha you already enjoy from Marukyu Koyamaen or Hoshino Seichaen. No particular brand or โ€œceremonial gradeโ€ label is required for this recipe. For help choosing a powder, see our matcha buying guide.

How to Adjust the Flavor

  • Too tart: Add a small amount of simple syrup, stir, and taste again.
  • Too sweet: Dilute with a splash of cold water. For your next glass, use a less sweet lemonade.
  • Tea flavor too strong: Use slightly less matcha next time or add more prepared lemonade if its sweetness and acidity already suit you.
  • Tea flavor too faint: Try a little less lemonade, or slightly more matcha in your next serving.
  • Clumpy: Sift the matcha and mix it with water before adding lemonade. Stirring dry powder directly into the finished drink is harder to get smooth.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I mix matcha with cold water?

Yes. Sifting and shaking with cool water is a convenient method for this drink. Matcha is dispersed in the liquid rather than completely dissolved, so some settling is normal. Stir again as needed.

Can I use homemade lemonade?

Yes. Prepare and chill it first, then measure the amount for the recipe. Taste it before adding matcha so you know whether it needs more water or sweetener.

Does matcha lemonade contain milk?

This recipe contains no milk. It uses water and lemonade as the base.

Can I make it ahead?

For the simplest preparation, chill your lemonade in advance and mix the matcha when you are ready to serve. Adding ice just before drinking helps avoid unnecessary dilution.
