Collection: Suikaen Takayama Chasen – Authentic Japanese Bamboo Matcha Whisks
Takayama Chasen ( 翠華園 茶筌|谷村弥三郎|奈良県生駒市 ) are handcrafted Japanese bamboo matcha whisks made by the artisans of Suikaen in Takayama, Nara. Loved by tea ceremony practitioners and matcha lovers worldwide, each whisk blends powder and water into a smooth, frothy cup.
Takayama Chasen: A Legacy of Japanese Tea Whisks
Nestled in the historic heart of Nara’s Takayama, our tea whisks—known as Takayama Chasen—carry a tradition dating back over 530 years. Originating from an idea by the monk Juko at Nara’s Shomyoji Temple, Suikaen’s chasen are crafted with skills passed down through generations by the Tanimura family, including Yasaburo Tanimura.
Why Takayama Chasen Are Revered
Takayama produces the majority of Japan’s chasen (matcha whisks), thanks to a climate ideal for cultivating quality bamboo. Each whisk begins in winter: carefully selected bamboo from the Kinki region is sun-dried and conditioned to achieve the perfect texture, flexibility, and resilience.
The Spirit of Omotenashi in Every Whisk
At the core of our craftsmanship is Japan’s spirit of omotenashi, reflecting the subtlety and depth of tea ceremony (chanoyu). This ethos emphasizes thoughtful preparation and hospitality—embodied in every ceremony where our chasen creates a serene moment focused solely on the enjoyment of tea.
Craftsmanship Passed Down in Takayama
Since the Muromachi period, Takayama has remained a center of chasen production. The rhythm of carving and splitting bamboo blends with nature, preserving a local industry sustained by land, craft, and community. We continue to share this heritage through Suikaen Takayama Chasen.
How to Use & Care for Your Chasen
- Soak the whisk in warm water for 1–2 minutes to soften the tines.
- Sift matcha, add hot water (~70–80°C), then whisk briskly in an “M/W” motion until frothy.
- Rinse with warm water (no soap) and air-dry on a stand in a ventilated place.
